How to use the Library: QMU Students and Staff

Our professional team of staff offer a wide range of services to all QMU students, staff and visitors. From help with joining and borrowing; enquiry service, interlibrary loans and photocopying as well as subject support from Liaison Librarians.

How to join

All staff and students are entitled to use the LRC.

When joining Queen Margaret University you are issued with a Staff or Student card: this card is used to gain access to the LRC and borrow from us. After you have matriculated (students), you are automatically registered to borrow from the library. Cards are not transferable.

Your card should be brought on all visits to the Library as books are not usually issued without it.

What can I borrow?

Members of staff and research students
30 books, 5 audio-visual items and Interlibrary loans
 Taught postgraduate students
25 books, 5 audio-visual items and Interlibrary loans
 Undergraduate students
20 books, 5 audio-visual items and Interlibrary loans

How long can I keep them?

We have two loan periods for items in the LRC.  They can be identified by the tape and labels on the book spine.

  •  NO TAPE  is a 21 DAY LOAN. This can be renewed.
  •  YELLOW TAPE  is a 7 DAY LOAN.  This can be renewed.
  •  RED LABEL  is a REFERENCE ONLY item. For use in LRC only.

Audio Visual (AV) items

AV 7 DAY LOAN - Standalone CDs and DVDs that are found in the main library stock. You may need to ask for the disc at the desk.

AV 21 DAY LOAN - CDs and DVDs that accompany books.  These discs are found beside the books.

Renewals

21 DAY and 7 DAY loan items will be renewed automatically, unless your account is blocked or the items are required by other users. Other types of loans must be renewed manually by the borrower.  Please see the Automatic Renewal Policy document above or our video below for more information.
