How to use the Library: Alumni, School Pupils and Members of the Public

Our professional team of staff offer a wide range of services to all QMU students, staff and visitors. From help with joining and borrowing; enquiry service, interlibrary loans and photocopying as well as subject support from Liaison Librarians.

How to join

 All applicants can apply using this form below or collect a form from the LRC Helpdesk.

  • Ex-QMU staff and students can join for a yearly fee of £20 or pay £80 for a lifetime membership. Alumni need to provide a copy of their degree certificate when applying.
  • Members of the public may apply to join the Library for an annual fee of £55. You must also provide another form of identification with proof of address.
  • Senior school pupils must bring a letter of introduction from their school.

Acceptance as an external member is at the discretion of the Head of Learning Services.

Members of the public who do not wish to join the Library may use the Library for reference purposes only. Please sign in as a visitor at the main campus reception desk and ask to be directed to the Learning Resource Centre.

Alumni and Members of the Public - what can I borrow?

You can borrow 6 items from the

7 Day Loan or 21 Day Loan category

 

Renewals

If not required by other readers, most 21 Day and 7 Day loans can be renewed for a further period.

Items can be renewed in these ways:

  • Use the self service machines opposite the Helpdesk
  • in person at the Helpdesk
  • by telephone on 0131 474 0000, ask for Library or The Helpdesk
  • emailing lrchelp@qmu.ac.uk 

 

What else can I do?

Opening Times

External borrowers can access the library only during staffed hours. Please see here for times.

Help with Finding Materials

General help finding materials is available at the Library Helpdesk. However, if you require extra assistance, please phone in advance for advice.

Wireless Access

Students from other Universities can connect to our Eduroam Wireless Network.  Other visitors can use our Guest Wireless Network.

Library Regulations

All library users must abide by the Library Regulations. Copies are available in the Library or online

 

Senior School Pupils - what can I borrow?

You can borrow 2 items from the

7 Day Loan or 21 Day Loan category

 

Fines

Fines charges

21 day loans - 20p per item per day
7 day loans - 50p per item per day

Failure to return or renew overdue loans will result in the borrower being invoiced for the cost of replacement. There is currently a minimum charge of £20.00 per item plus a billing fee. The borrower will still be liable for the billing fee if the item is returned. Billing fees are detailed below.

21 day loan - billed when 35 days overdue - £8 + replacement cost

7 day loan - billed when 31 days overdue - £12 + replacement cost

Please note that membership may be withdrawn if the user is not in good standing, i.e. non-payment of fines.

Funds can be added to your external borrower card or a visitor card and  fines can be paid for at the LRC Helpdesk.  Alternatively, you can pay at our Finance Office -  Please then bring your receipt to the LRC Helpdesk.

Restrictions

Some of our resources are restricted to current matriculated students and staff.

Therefore, external membership does not allow:

  • access to online resources e.g. ebooks, ejournals and databases
  • access to DVDs and Videos
  • access to Interlibrary Loans
  • the ability to reserve or recall items
