How to use the Library: QMU Students and Staff

Our professional team of staff offer a wide range of services to all QMU students, staff and visitors. From help with joining and borrowing; enquiry service, interlibrary loans and photocopying as well as subject support from Liaison Librarians.

How to join

All staff and students are entitled to use the LRC.

When joining Queen Margaret University you are issued with a Staff or Student card: this card is used to gain access to the LRC and borrow from us. After you have matriculated (students), you are automatically registered to borrow from the library. Cards are not transferable.

Your card should be brought on all visits to the Library as books are not usually issued without it.

What can I borrow?

Members of staff and research students
30 books, 5 audio-visual items and Interlibrary loans
 Taught postgraduate students
25 books, 5 audio-visual items and Interlibrary loans
 Undergraduate students
20 books, 5 audio-visual items and Interlibrary loans

How long can I keep them?

We have two loan periods for items in the LRC.  They can be identified by the tape and labels on the book spine.

  •  NO TAPE  is a 21 DAY LOAN. This can be renewed.
  •  YELLOW TAPE  is a 7 DAY LOAN.  This can be renewed.
  •  RED LABEL  is a REFERENCE ONLY item. For use in LRC only.

Audio Visual (AV) items

DVD 1 DAY LOAN - this is a collection of Films that you will find next to the Ad-Hoc Group Study room or on the catalogue.  Bring the box to the desk. You can borrow these for the weekend too. These cannot be renewed.

AV 7 DAY LOAN - Standalone CDs and DVDs that are found in the main library stock. You may need to ask for the disc at the desk.

AV 21 DAY LOAN - CDs and DVDs that accompany books.  These discs are found beside the books.

In addition, we have a couple of laptops for 1 DAY or weekend loan.  Please ask for these at the LRC Service Desk.

21 DAY and 7 DAY loan items will be renewed automatically, unless your account is blocked or the items are required by other users. Other types of loans must be renewed manually by the borrower.  Please see the Automatic Renewal Policy document above or our video below for more information.

Items can be renewed by:

  • Using the self service machines opposite the LRC helpdesk
  • Login to the library catalogue with your QMU student number and password
  • Asking at the Helpdesk
  • Phoning 0131 474 0000 and ask for the Library or the Helpdesk
  • Emailing

The following fines are currently levied for overdue loans:

  • 21 day loans - 20p per item per day
  • 7 day loans - 50p per item per day
  • 1 day loans (DVDs) - £3 per item per day (All discs/videos are charged individually, including those in a set)

Failure to return or renew overdue loans will result in the borrower being invoiced for the cost of replacement. There is currently a minimum charge of £20.00 per item plus a billing fee.  The billing fee is the made up of a £2 processing charge and the maximum overdue fine on the item.

The borrower will still be liable for the billing fee if the item is returned. Billing fees are detailed below.

21 day loan - billed when 35 days overdue - £8 + replacement cost

7 day loan - billed when 31 days overdue - £12 + replacement cost

1 day loan (DVDs) - billed when 25 days overdue - £17 + replacement cost

Please ask if you wish to know about other loan types.

Please note these fines are subject to change at the discretion of the Head of Library Services without notice.

Payments can be made using your Smartcard at the LRC Helpdesk.  Alternatively, you can pay via the Library Catalogue, by logging into your account.  Our Finance Office also accept payments with cash or credit/debit card.
