Teaching Resources and Support: Books and scanned extracts

This guide provides information about where to find teaching materials, through QMU Library subscriptions and open licensing.

Books for teaching

If you are including books as essential or recommended items on your reading lists, the Library needs to have copies available for students. How many copies we purchase, or if we are able to purchase an ebook, is dependent on budget and our Collections Management Policy.

The Library needs to know which books you are including on your reading list in good time before the start of the course to ensure books are available for students.

Ordering books

To check whether the Library has the books required for your module please search the catalogue or Discover.

If not, you will need to let the Library know which books are needed for your module. There are three ways to do this:

  1. Creating a Talis Resource List and adding books to the list using the bookmarking tool or manually adding them
  2. Providing a list to your subject librarian
  3. Placing orders for the books using our online form

Digitising chapters

In some cases it is possible to scan an extract of a book to allow all students to read a key chapter or section. This is limited by strict regulations about what can be scanned, and is audited by the CLA. All scanning must be undertaken by Library staff, uploaded to the CLA Content Store and made available to students via links in Talis Resource Lists (or directly on Canvas where a Talis list does not exist).

To make a scanning request please contact the Library by emailing CLAScanning@qmu.ac.uk with details of the book, which section you need, and which module it is for.

Please note that it takes some time to complete this process, so please ensure you communicate your scanning needs with the Library in good time.
