Referencing and Plagiarism: Turnitin

Turnitin is a web-based service that we use at QMU with the intention of helping you to check that your assignment work does not contain plagiarism. You will normally use this service prior to submitting your work for marking and can access Turnitin via your Canvas module area.

Turnitin is a third-party system which provides a similarity reporting service. The 'similarity score' which is returned within the Canvas assignment, assists students in improving their academic writing and referencing skills. The score reveals the percentage of words within a submitted assignment which match text in other works that are available online (e.g. electronic journal articles, websites, and previously submitted student papers that are saved within the extensive Turnitin databases).

  1. To view your Similarity Report after submitting to your Canvas assignments, navigate to your assignment and click on the assignment name.

  1. Select the Submission Details link on the right.

  1. Select the Similarity Score to view the report in a new tab.

  1. You can also view the report from Grades. Select the Similarity Score to view the report in a new tab.

  1. It is possible that your institution is using the Canvas Student Experience view. If the upload submission window does not look like the image above, it may look like this instead:

If you can't open the Similarity Report, your module leader may have prevented students from viewing it.
