A guide to our Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service

Frequently Asked Questions

What is British Library On Demand?

British Library On Demand (BLOD) is the service by which the British Library supplies electronic documents, e.g. journal articles by Inter Library Loan.

What is DRM Lite?

DRM Lite is a digital rights management system which enables the BLOD service to supply secure, encrypted documents and at the same time ensure that the item is used as permitted while also protecting the rights of the copyright holder.

How can I register with British Library On Demand?

The registration is quick and you only need to do it once. Request the document you want using the existing process via the QMU Library web pages. Library staff will process your request and on receipt of your electronic document will email you at your QMU email address with the link to the document. Click on the link and follow the steps to create your account with BLOD.

What can I do if I have forgotten my BLOD username or password, or if my password changes?

If you have forgotten your username or password you can request a reminder to be sent to your registered email address from the login link on the BLOD home page If you change your password you can continue to access the saved documents using your new password. If you have problems doing this you may need to clear the remembered account information in Adobe Reader. This can be done at Edit>Preferences>Security.

What software do I need?

You will need Adobe Reader version 10 or higher. IT services have installed Adobe Reader version 10 on all campus terminals. If you are accessing the document from a personal device you can download Adobe Reader 10 here.

Can I use other readers to view the document?

No, DRM Lite will only work with Adobe Reader 10 or above and documents will not open with any other reader.

Why can't I open the link to my article in the email from BLOD?

Documents supplied by the BLOD service are available for download for 30 days from the date of supply. After that they will expire and will not be able to be opened via the link. In this has happened the item will need to be re-ordered and will incur an additional ILL charge to you. Alternatively it may be that Adobe Reader 10 is not installed on your computer or device.

Can I download an item to a memory stick?

Yes you can. Once downloaded to a memory stick or device etc the document will be available to you for 3 years.
