Deaf Studies and Interpreting: Using other libraries

Maximising your opportunities

As a student at QMU, you will have access to a large collection of online content but there will be times when you are searching for articles and you find one that is absolutely amazing, ticks all your boxes and is perfect for the presentation/essay/dissertation that you are working on but the full text isn't available.  Here are some suggestions on how to maximise the opportunities available that allow you to use other libraries.

National Library of Scotland

Search for journals held in other UK institutions

Jisc Library Hub Discover exposes rare and unique research material by bringing together the catalogues of major UK and Irish libraries. In a single search you can discover the holdings of the UK’s National Libraries (including the British Library), many university libraries, and specialist research libraries. Use Jisc Library Hub Discover to find journals that QMU doesn’t subscribe to.

Use another HE/University Library

QMU LRC is part of a UK-wide scheme enabling access to other higher education and research libraries that are part of the scheme.  Click on the SCONUL Access link below; to find out more about the scheme, the libraries involved, and to complete the online application form.

Edinburgh Libraries Passport Scheme

The Edinburgh Libraries Passport (ELP) is a card which tells the library you are visiting that you are a genuine information seeker and that your requirements cannot be dealt with at your own library. It is of particular benefit to students and staff who are trying to obtain reference access to some of the specialist libraries in Edinburgh that are not members of other schemes.

For more details of libraries participating in the scheme go to the Edinburgh Libraries Passport page at ELISA.

Application forms are available at the Service Desk who can also issue you with an ELP card.

Further assistance

If you are unsure about access to any library, please contact lrchelp@qmu.ac.uk for more information or ask at the Helpdesk.

If the materials you need are not available in your local area or you are a research student or member of staff, the final step is to apply for the materials via our Inter Library Loan (ILL) Service.
