A guide to our Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service

Information on ILL changes Summer 2017

Re-instatement of ILL charges

From 1st August 2017 Learning Services will be re-instating charges for ILL requests, ending the period of free requests which has run from February 2016. 3rd and 4th year undergraduates will have an allowance of 3 free requests and postgraduates 5 per annum running from 1st August to 31st July. Further requests beyond this allowance will be charged to their library account at the standard British Library rate. Academic colleagues will not receive a free allowance and will be charged at the standard  British Library rate for all requests. The Library will recharge the relevant departments for these requests. Current rates are available here.

Change in delivery of electronic items

The previous method of delivery of electronic ILL documents was replaced on 1st July 2017 by British Library On Demand. This change is to enable the British Library to implement digital rights management on the electronic documents they supply. As a result requestors will need to open an account with BL On Demand. This can be done on receipt of the first document requested under the new service.  All ILL requests will continue to be made in the usual way, it is just the delivery method of electronic items which is changing. FAQs about the change can be found here .

About the service

The LRC is part of an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) network that allows us to borrow material from the British Library and other libraries in the UK, should we not own or have access to these items in our own library.

Staff and students can request material necessary for their research and coursework via our ILL service. Before requesting, please bear in mind that some ILL requests might take some time to fulfill, especially for obscure titles. You will be informed if there will be a delay with your request.

You can contact our ILL service at

You may also find useful information on how to obtain material we do not hold at Using Other Libraries

Who can use the service?

  • Academic staff
  • Postgraduate students
  • Undergraduate students

Academic staff  - From 1st August 2017 ILL requests made by academic staff will be chargeable. Departments will be invoiced on a monthly basis.

Postgraduate students - From 1st August 2017 postgraduates will be allowed 5 free requests. Once these have been used, further requests will be payable and charges made to their Library account.

Undergraduate students - From 1st August 2017 3rd and 4th year undergraduates will be allowed 3 free requests. Once these have been used further requests will be payable and charges made to their Library account.

3rd and 4th Year undergraduate students must have their ILL requests authorised by their course tutor. 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students are not expected to have need of the service as library collections should be sufficient for their needs. If however a student feels that an item QMU Library does not hold then they are free to apply for a chargeable ILL request.

If undergraduates do decide to request a chargeable ILL request then authorisation is not required.
