Touchdown Kiosk: Support for Disabled Students

A LibGuide that forms the home page for the new Touchdown Kiosk being installed as part of the Future Spaces project.

Introduction

Library Services are able to offer various services to support disabled students.

Disabled students should contact the Student Services Disability Service in the first instance as use of the additional resources may be dependent on referral from their Disability Adviser.

Assistive Technology Room - Level 1 - LRC

The Learning Resource Centre has a separate room,1160, that students can access if they have been referred to do so by their disability advisor.

Equipment within this room-

5 terminals and space for using own devices.

High visibility keyboard 'gloves'

Coloured paper

  • To print on colour paper - insert this into tray 1 in any MFD.
  • Charges for printing are deducted from student’s printing balance as usual.
  • More coloured paper can be obtained from the Helpdesk.

For more information on how to use this software students can contact their disability advisor.

Use of room

  • Open 24/7 - If locked go to Security/Helpdesk.
  • Talking is allowed (not a quiet study room) but be respectful if others are in the room.
  • If there is space, students are welcome to use the room for meeting tutors or support workers.
  • There are no reserved spaces in the room - first come, first served.
  • Students should not leave any belongings unattended.
  • Speak with student services if any allergies in case service animals use the room.
  • No restriction on occupancy capacity within room.
  • Any problems come to the Helpdesk or contact Helpdesk@qmu.ac.uk in the first instance.


 

Additional Library support

Book Collection Service - If you need help getting books from the shelves, staff will be happy to help. Please ask at the Helpdesk. Alternatively, you can email helpdesk@qmu.ac.uk with a list of items that you require and we will arrange to have the items placed on the Hold Shelf for you to collect at the Helpdesk.

RNIB Bookshare

RNIB Bookshare: Academic Books in Accessible Formats

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) provides accessible format academic books through its RNIB Bookshare Education Collection to all print disabled students. 

Accessible formats include: Daisy audio (with or without images), MP3, Braille (BRF), Epub, PDF and Word (Docx).
