Touchdown Kiosk: Home

A LibGuide that forms the home page for the new Touchdown Kiosk being installed as part of the Future Spaces project.

Welcome

Welcome to the Learning Resource Centre.

This kiosk is designed to provide you with answers to your common queries about the LRC and its services. It also provides you with details of other support that is available to you during your time at QMU.

Get to know your new space

Do we have access to less books now?

No, we reduced the amount of book stock we had through reducing the number of copies and number of previous editions of books that we held.

Where are the quiet spaces in the LRC now.

The quiet spaces in the LRC are located in the two rooms overlooking University Square, at the far end of the LRC in rooms 1123B and in the individual study carrels which are bookable by students. If you need any help with booking these please speak to the Helpdesk. Additionally when the teaching rooms (1124 - 1126) are not being used for teaching these can be used for quiet study.

Our group wants to work in a closed room - can we still do that?

Yes. You are still able to books group study rooms via the timetabling system, which can easily be accessed via a QR code on the door of each room. If you have any difficulties with booking these rooms please speak to the Helpdesk. The new group collaboration spaces in the centre of LRC are intended for more interactive collaboration and as such you may hear others working together, practicing presentations and watching different forms of media.

What should I do if someone is being really noisy in one of the collaboration spaces?

While the new spaces are intended for collaboration and not quiet study, we would expect everyone using them to be respectful of others.

If another group is creating a lot of noise, you should speak to the Helpdesk during its staffed hours and to the staff at the Reception Desk outside of the staffed hours.

If you want a quiet space to study you should use one of the quiet spaces detailed above.

If your group wants to work in a closed room you should book one of the 6 group study rooms in the LRC as detailed above.

How do we adjust the lighting?

In all of the new collaboration spaces and throughout the refurbished areas of the LRC there are lighting controls that allow you to adjust the lighting in that space or zone.  You will find these on the walls of the collaboration spaces and on the concrete columns throughout the rest of LRC

Can I move the furniture around?

The new LRC has been designed to offer a range of different spaces to work in and to encourage and support collaboration. As such some of the new furniture such as the stools and movable whiteboards are intended for you to move around. However the heavier items such as sofas, privacy chairs and tables are not intended to be moved around so we would ask that you leave these where they are located.

Can I still borrow a laptop?

Yes - the laptop loan lockers are still available they have just moved to the south end of the LRC outside of room 1126.

Are there less places to plug in my laptop now?

No, in fact there are far more power points. All of the tables where the operator chairs are located have them as do the booths and the high benches. Much of the other furniture has sockets in it, generally at the bottom, or are located in areas where we have made a socket available in the floor. Look for a square silver plate that covers the socket.
